I took away only one star because the instructions are poorly written, But given that there is also a video that you can watch to figure it out, I do think it is deserving of at least 4 stars.
You can tell, even though they may not speak the same language, that they are trying to provide a good service. I was able to get the software going on my laptop. I will try to amend their instructions to be clearer. On step 4, if the driver installs correctly, you probably don’t have to worry about this step. I probably spent too much time on this step I think windows had installed the correct driver for me automatically and all was good to go, but I uninstalled it and followed the video to make sure.
I probably didn’t need to do that. If you see those, I believe your driver is installed correctly, and you should proceed to the next steps. If you see this, the driver is not installed; it shows this part of the setup procedure in the video around so you can follow along on how to do that. In fact, the entire setup process is shown in the video if you have a question on anything.
You can test that I’m right by unplugging your device and seeing that device manager updates to remove the entries I mentioned, and that it adds them back when you plug back in. On step 5, it says “[ Click that and click “OK”. That will complete step 5. On step 6, you need to copy the correct patch shortcut to your desktop, either the 32 or 64 bit version, depending on your system.
This is how you will launch the software and connect to your vehicle. There is one hang-up here that is not mentioned in the instructions. Apparently, there is a new version of Techstream available, so a dialogue box opens when you click the patch. It says “update now” or “update later”. Don’t make the mistake I did of thinking that this step is supposed to update the software, and that you’re supposed to click “update now”.
It will just open a browser window to update the software, which you can’t do without being a dealership or paying for the software. What you want to click is “update later”. After doing so, you can link your vehicle. You click the patch every time you want to connect to your vehicle. That’s all there is to it. This worked for my Highlander, but software installation was challenging.
I was able to install the Techstream application and the driver with minimal issues, by following the cryptic instructions.
However, my laptop automatically identified the cable driver, so I didn’t need to use the laptop Device Manager to alter the mVCI driver settings. I wasted some time figuring this out. This patch is used to bypass the software registration key, and without it you will be unable to proceed past the title page of the application without purchasing a key.
My laptop could not recognize or unzip the file. I downloaded and installed a free trial version of WinZip Google it , which unzipped the.
Now you should have 3 items on your laptop: the Techstream application, the cable driver, and the Patch. To use the mVCI, attach the harness connector to your vehicle, the USB to your laptop, turn on your vehicle, then double click the Patch icon. Do NOT open the Techstream application directly. Functionality is great. So far, it beats spending the hundreds of dollars some other units cost. It was a bit janky to setup and use, but after about 20 minutes of messing with it I was able to get it to connect.

It should now display the driver version as 2. So keep that MiniVCI cable plugged in. Now, you need to import the mvci-x So simply double click it, and import it when prompted.
You may also need the IT3 ini files in the zip for your Techstream. They go in the ENV folder inside the Techstream install folder. Now, you should be safe to open Techstream and verify operation. So turn on the ignition and connect. Get the correct driver from FTDI website.
Hopefully, this will help others by reducing the number of hours it takes to get this damn thing to work. The chip is essentially a translator so that the computer can communicate with the vehicle, and vice versa.
